What You Need to Know About Hosting Guests in a Tiny House

Contemplating a tiny home is often a very dreamy experience. You stare at tiny house Instagram photos, digitally leaf through our tiny home gallery, and imagine all the peaceful, cozy times you’ll have.

It’s a wonderful phase of your tiny home journey.

One that at some point, will be punctured by thoughts of panic:

Can I really live in a tiny house?!

What if my tiny home parking space requires a composting toilet?!

How will I ever have friends over?!

If you’ve experienced moments of tiny house panic, you are not alone. Moreover, your concerns are valid. You deserve a house that fully meets your needs, even if it’s smaller than a traditional home.

So that part about having friends over? Don’t worry about it. You can definitely host guests in a tiny home, and we’re here to help. Here’s what you need to know about hosting guests in a tiny house!

Designing a Tiny House for Hosting Guests

If hosting guests is a part of your life, you will naturally want to continue once you live in a tiny house. In fact, it can be even more fun to host guests in a tiny house because people tend to go bananas for tiny homes.

We are so excited for you to know the joy of tiny home hosting, but before you start designing your tiny house around hosting guests- don’t.

Here’s why.

Your tiny home is a concentrated experience of what it means to be you. That means you’ll want to design your home around how you spend most of your time. Yes, even though you truly love your friends and family.

So our two cents? Design your tiny house for you. You can still have guests over. We’re going to show you how!

Guest Shoes in a Tiny Home

Once your tiny home house guests have set down their things, they will want a tiny house tour -at least the first time they visit, anyway!

Tiny home tours are a great way to show off the fun features of your home and share the joy of the tiny house lifestyle.

However, if you are a new tiny home owner, we bring to you this word of caution: in the throes of tiny house excitement, your guests will forget that they are in someone else’s house.

This means they are liable to open drawers, climb into your loft, and discover that the compartment in the bottom stair is where you keep your underwear!

There is less space in a tiny home, and this means your intimate items are more easily discovered. And since you can’t count on someone who is entranced by a tiny home to follow the traditional rules of privacy, you might want to hide things you don’t want to be discovered before they come over.

Just a thought!

Toilet Tips for Having Guests in a Tiny Home

No one wants to be uncomfortable about having to use the bathroom, so when you have tiny house guests over, it’s a good idea to give them a few tips.

In our experience, guests have three fears:

  1. That you will be able to hear them.
  2. That you will be able to smell them.
  3. That they won’t know how to use your composting toilet.

Once you’ve lived tiny for more than a week, you’ll realize that smell isn’t any more of an issue in a tiny home than a regular home, and that, no, you can’t hear people pee, and that composting toilets actually have no smell.

Your guests won’t know this, though, so be sure to tell them. Having a little air freshener and labelling the fan switch in your bathroom couldn’t hurt either.

Oh, and if you have a composting toilet, definitely explain how to use it.

Tiny Home Guest Seating

Once your guests have set their things down, taken a tiny house tour, and used your bathroom, it will be time to settle in for the festivities.

This is where guest seating comes into play!

Now, you don’t want to design your tiny house around guests, but it’s worth at least envisioning where they might sit before they arrive.

If you have a couch, that will be the obvious answer. L-shaped couches are especially great for having people over in a tiny home because they allow you to face each other.

Some tiny house guests will sit on stairs, storage ottomans, or desk chairs. You could also be
sneaky and keep a couple of thin folding chairs behind your couch for this very purpose.

Being a tiny home dweller is all about being creative, so we’ll know you’ll think of something.  Just make sure everyone has a seat and you’ll be fine. The party is just beginning!
