Debunking the Top Tiny House Myths

Are you excited to go tiny, but just a teensy bit worried about a few tiny house rumours you may
have heard?

As tiny home builders, we’re thrilled to see the rates of tiny home ownership skyrocket, but even with so many success stories, the rumours can still be cause for pause.

Is there a downside to tiny homes?

At Mint Tiny House Company, we’re committed to telling you everything. Sometimes, that means setting expectations, but other times, it means setting the record straight! (And today, we’ll be doing both.)

So if the rumors have had you nervous about jumping into the tiny house lifestyle, just stick with us because we’re about to debunk the top tiny house myths!

Tiny House Myth: A Tiny House Is the Cheapest Possible Housing

Online tiny house forums are rife with a major critique: tiny homes are so expensive! How dare tiny home builders charge so much for a house that’s so small?!

Those same people then go on to compare tiny homes to traditional RVs- you know, the ones with R-4 to R-7 insulation values. (Here at Mint, our homes are R-21, thank you very much!)

People often equate size with affordability, and while having a more affordable roof is almost always part of the tiny home buying equation, it’s only one of the reasons people buy tiny homes.

So what’s the truth?

The Tiny House Truth: A Tiny House Can be a MORE Affordable Option That Offers Many Lifestyle Benefits

The truth is that tiny homes offer many benefits.

If you live in a high-cost-of-living area, a tiny home is almost certainly a less expensive way to achieve your dream of homeownership.

Tiny homes also offer other benefits like helping you live an intentional life, lower your consumption habits, and build a life of ‘doing’ rather than ‘having.’

The Tiny House Myth: You’ll Have to Get Rid of All Your Stuff

Maybe you want to go tiny, but then you have visions of donating absolutely everything you own to a charity shop, throwing away your sentimental items, and never having guests over because you only have one set of silverware.

If that’s you, please stop buying into this tiny house myth!

We promise it’s not nearly that bad. In fact, you might even find the downsizing process refreshing. Here’s the truth!

The Tiny House Truth: You’ll Only Have to Let Go of Things You Don’t Deeply Value

You will have to let some things go, but the deeper truth is that you can keep anything you deeply value. (Although you can’t cheat and “deeply value” everything!)

The tiny house lifestyle helps us remove physical and emotional clutter from our lives by forcing us to question what the current chapter of our lives is really about.

Does this mean you’ll have to get rid of those board games you haven’t played in ten months? Maybe. But do you have to get rid of your cherished coffee cup collection? No. In fact, let’s build you some floating shelves to really display those things!

The downsizing process can be difficult, but the result is that you will experience the things you love more intensely.

The Tiny House Myth: Living Tiny in a Tiny House With Kids Is Impossible

Do you want to go tiny, but get nervous about what living in a small space could do to your family?

How will everyone have alone time? Where will the kids play? Where will everyone eat dinner?

If this sounds like you, the truth may surprise you!

The Tiny House Truth: Plenty of Families Enjoy the Tiny House Lifestyle

We deliver this tiny house truth with two caveats:

  • Know your family. Tiny homes work for many families, but not all of them so it’s good to ask questions.
  • You need to find the right tiny house floor plan. Did you know we are one of the few tiny home builders to offer a two-bedroom tiny home?!

We will always honour our commitment to honesty by telling you the fine print, but the overarching truth is that a tiny home can be a powerful tool for creating an incredible childhood.

Less space means being together more often and developing better communication habits. It also means playing outside, learning thoughtful consumerism, and continually asking the question, what do we value most?

So if you think your kids could benefit from more presence and fewer presents, a tiny house could be the way to go!

The Tiny House Myth: Tall People Can’t Live in Tiny Homes

Are you tall and worried you won’t fit in a tiny house?

If you’ve spent your life constantly feeling like the world isn’t sized for you, it’s easy to see why you might have doubts about tiny living.

Yes, tiny homes are, well, tiny, but if you have been worried that your height would make it impossible to live in one, we’re about to completely debunk this tiny house myth!

The Tiny House Truth: Tall People Can Totally Live in Tiny Homes!

We know many tiny home owners who are over six feet tall. In fact, many are well over six feet tall. So if that’s you, you have nothing to worry about when it comes to living in a tiny home.

Tiny homes might have less space, but that just means that as builders, we’ve had to step up our game when it comes to functionality.

Sure, maybe you don’t want a loft bedroom, but that’s the beauty of having a home built just for you. Would you like the countertops to be higher? How about the showerhead?

Did we mention that many of our tiny homes come with vaulted ceilings?

You’re already calling us, aren’t you? 😉
